Casework Counselling approaches

Counselling involves developing a therapeutic relationship with a professional to speak about personal issues and concerns. People often comment that it can be helpful to speak to a professional as they are someone who is more impartial and not involved in their life in the way a family member or a friend might be.

At North Yarra Community Health the Counsellors use a variety of theories and approaches; however a central philosophy of the Counselling Team is that the work aims to be “client centred” and therefore is guided by the clients' expressed needs and capacities.

Currently we are running the Peek a Boo Group that focuses on the attachment relationship between mum's and their babies and toddlers. Families that attend this group have identified some concerns in these relationships or have had an experience of trauma.

The Casework Counselling Team also facilitates a Mindfulness Group. This approach has been shown to be helpful in alleviating anxiety, depression and chronic pain. A significant part of the group involves assisting people change their relationship to their thoughts and feelings through meditation practice.

To contact a casework counsellor, send an email to cw-couns.intake@nych.org.au or phone any of the NYCH sites.
